Clostridium difficile (C. difficile or C. diff) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA) are the leading causes of nosocomial infection.¹ C. diff is an opportune pathogen, affecting primarily the elderly and the immunocompromised. Currently more than 500,000 cases of C. difficile infection (CDI) are diagnosed each year in the U.S.² In the U.S between 1999 and 2004, mortality from CDI increased from 5.7 deaths per million people to 23.7 per million.³
