NEW CORONA VIRUS

New virus is MORE deadly than Sars, warn scientists after second Briton dies taking death toll to 11

  • New research shows coronavirus affects many organs and kills quickly
  • 'It could be more virulent than Sars' says microbiologist
  • Announced this week that second British man has died from virus

A new virus which has claimed the life of a second Briton is potentially more deadly than Sars, scientists have warned. The mysterious coronavirus, which has emerged in the Middle East, attacks the respiratory system and was only identified six months ago.
So far there have been 11 deaths - with the World Health Organisation this week saying a second British man has died.

New research has found that unlike Sars - severe acute respiratory syndrome  - the new virus affects many different organs in the body, killing cells extremely quickly.
Speaking to the South China Morning Post,  microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung,  said if the virus mutated further it could cause a deadly pandemic.
'It could be more virulent [than Sars]', he said. 'The Sars coronavirus infects very few human cell lines. But this new virus can infect many types of human cell lines, and kill cells rapidly.'

Seventeen cases have been announced since the WHO issued an alert in September last year, most of them with links to the Middle East.
This week it was announced that a 73-year-old man from the United Arab Emirates had also died from the virus.
He was flown to hospital in Munich last week and died on Tuesday, the World Health Organisation said.

It also confirmed a British man with a history of travel to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan had died in a British hospital.
The source of coronavirus is not known, but experts believe it originated in bats.
Animals which could host the virus include monkeys, pigs and even rabbits
Scientists say the new virus is from the same viral family that causes the common cold and also triggered the outbreak of Sars which swept the world from Asia in late 2003, leaving 775 dead.
Symptoms of coronavirus - which doctors say spreads rapidly around the body within 48 hours of infection - include severe breathing difficulties, fever, coughing and pneumonia.
It can also attack the kidneys, according to health experts.
In a statement issued late on Tuesday, the WHO said it was encouraging governments to watch for all severe respiratory infections and especially for any unusual patterns they might take.
For the moment, the U.N. agency said, it was not advising countries to set up any special screening for the virus at entry points and was not recommending any of the travel or trade restrictions introduced during the SARS epidemic.
The first reported case of infection by the previously little-known virus was a Qatari man who had also traveled to Saudi Arabia. Earlier in 2012, a 60-year-old Saudi national was believed to have died from it.

A woman has been cured of anorexia thanks to pioneering surgery that 'rewired' her brain.

Kim Rollins, 36, was on the brink of death after suffering a heart attack, two strokes and broken bones since the onset of the eating disorder when she was 15.

By her early twenties she weighed less than a seven-year-old child and could barely face eating half an apple a day.

NEED FOR GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL in METRO TORONTO

COMMENT: A resident-resident killing in the Wexford Charitable Home for the Aged. A few years ago there was a killing of a resident by another in  the Villa Colombo Charitable Home for the Aged

Urgent need for a Geriatric Psychiatric Hospital for the psychotic aged. Now undiagnosed under the clinically useless euphemism of "special needs." .

In the 1980s Greenacres  Home for the Aged in Newmarket, North of Toronto, was a "snakepit" for the undiagnosed psychotic aged in Metro Toronto Homes for the Aged.. Medical attention was given by local GPs.(NOT Geriatric Psychiatists).

The closure of two psychiatric hospitals in Metro was a medical disaster  by (surprisingly) a Conservative government.

About The Wexford

The Wexford Residence is a non-profit, charitable organization founded by the Brotherhood Foundation. The Brotherhood Foundation is an outgrowth of the Church of the Christian Brotherhood.

As far as is known, this is the only church in the history of Ontario to have been established by an Act of Incorporation in the Provincial Legislature. The Bill incorporating the new Church was passed in March of 1919.

The first site for the Church was the Erskine Presbyterian Church formerly at Elm and University Avenue. Between the time when this property was expropriated for the Hospital for Sick Children in June 1948 and the construction of a new church at Blake and Grantbrook Avenue in 1960, the congregation held services at 111 Maitland Avenue which eventually became the home of the National Ballet of Canada.

By the spring of 1966 it had become obvious that declining membership and financial pressures made the closing of the Church inevitable. The assets of the congregation from the sale of the Church were put into a trust, and the interest on these funds was distributed to charitable Christian purposes.

In 1972 it was decided to put the money to good use. The Brotherhood Foundation was formed with the purpose of building a nursing home or similar project to help the aged.

With additional fundraising and assistance from various levels of Government, this multi-level seniors complex known as The Wexford Residence opened in 1978. It consisted at the time of retirement and nursing home (1 1/2 hr nursing care daily + Oxygen + catheter use), independent seniors apartments and an elderly persons centre. It was known at the time as “The House that love built”.

DANGER of NURSE TELEPHONE DIAGNOSIS

From UK DAILY MAIL

Man, 20, dies from swine flu and pneumonia after NHS Direct nurse told him to go to the chemist rather than A&E

  • Unnamed patient called hotline due to diarrhoea and vomiting, chesty cough and discoloured mucous
  • Senior nurse who spoke to him ignored the computer's advice about going to A&E and sent him to chemist
  • Patient died the next day after being rushed to hospital
By Anna Hodgekiss

A 20-year-old man died from swine flu and pneumonia after a senior nurse at NHS Direct told him to go to the chemist instead of A&E.
The unnamed man, known only as Patient A, had called the hotline twice in two days complaining of diarrhoea and vomiting for six days. He also described a chesty cough and discoloured mucous.
But rather than following the advice on the computer, which said the man should go to A&E, Fadzai Jaravaza, a senior nurse advisor for NHS Direct Essex, instead told the caller to get cough syrup from the chemist and treat himself.

ANTIBIOTIC OVERUSE

Superbugs 'will send the health service back to 19th century': Even routine surgery could become deadly, warns top medical adviser

  • Dame Sally Davies warns over timebomb over antibiotic resistance
  • GPs will be ordered to prescribe fewer antibiotics
  • Drug-resistant E-Coli could be responsible for 2,500 deaths
  • Cases of multidrug resistant tuberculosis rising
By Nick Mcdermott, Science Reporter

Growing threat: Infections like C. difficile are becoming increasingly difficult to treat as bugs become more resistant to antibiotics, leaving millions vulnerable
Growing threat: Infections like C. difficile are becoming increasingly difficult to treat as bugs become more resistant to antibiotics, leaving millions vulnerable
The rise of drug-resistant superbugs will drag the health service back ‘to the early 19th century’, Britain’s most senior medical adviser has warned.
Unless urgent action is taken, the ‘ticking timebomb’ of growing antibiotic resistance could leave millions vulnerable to untreatable bugs within a generation.
This could make even routine operations such as hip surgery deadly, said Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies.
In an attempt to tackle the problem, GPs will be ordered to prescribe fewer antibiotics.
While infections are becoming increasingly difficult to beat, no new class of antibiotic has been discovered since 1987. In contrast, a new infection emerges on an almost yearly basis.
Dame Sally said the ‘catastrophic threat’ from infections resistant to frontline antibiotics is so serious that she has asked the Government to put antibiotic resistance on the national risk register – ranking it alongside a large-scale terrorist attack or flu pandemic.
‘That is one way of getting central and cross-government action internationally,’ she said. ‘It should be [on the register] because this is a growing problem. And if we don’t get it right, we will find ourselves in a health system not dissimilar to the early 19th century at some point.
‘If we don’t act now, any one of us could go into hospital in 20 years for minor surgery and die because of an ordinary infection that can’t be treated by antibiotics. And routine operations like hip replacements or organ transplants could be deadly because of the risk of infection.’
Acknowledging that ‘global action’ must be taken, she said: ‘This is an international threat.’
In the past five years, the number of cases of blood poisoning from antimicrobial resistant (AMR) forms of E. coli – which is twice as fatal as the normal bug – has gone up 60 per cent.
The drug-resistant gut bug alone, which is picked up in hospital in half of cases, could be responsible for up to 2,500 deaths in 2011 – more than MRSA and C. difficile combined.
And a deadly strain of tuberculosis which cannot be dealt with by most treatments has trebled in Britain in little over a decade.
Figures from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show that instances of ‘multidrug resistant’ tuberculosis were 81 in 2011, up from just 28 in 2000, with around half of the patients dying.

MIDDLE EAST: NEW CORONA VIRUS (HUMAM TRANSMISSION)

From UK DAILY MAIL

Doctors warned to be vigilant for warn new deadly virus sweeping the globe from Middle East

  • The CDC is warning state and local health officials about potential deadly infections from never-before-seen virus
  • CDC says people who develop a severe lower respiratory illness within 10 days of returning from the Middle East should be evaluated
  • Health officials are also issuing warnings about antibiotic-resistant bugs hitting U.S. hospitals
By Daily Mail Reporter and Reuters Reporter
|

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday warned state and local health officials about potential infections from a deadly virus previously unseen in humans that has now sickened 14 people and killed 8.
Most of the infections have occurred in the Middle East, but a new analysis of three confirmed infections in Britain suggests the virus can pass from person to person rather than from animal to humans, the CDC said in its Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report on Thursday.
The virus is a coronavirus, part of the same family of viruses as the common cold and the deadly outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that first emerged in Asia in 2003. The new virus is not the same as SARS, but like the SARS virus, it is similar to those found in bats.
