Funding To Hire 2014 Physician Assistant Graduates Now Available

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is now accepting funding applications for Physician Assistant (PA) Career Start grants to employ Ontario’s 2014 PA graduates. The application deadline is August 15, 2014.
Financial support of $46,000 (50:50 cost split with employer) will be provided to help eligible employers provide employment opportunities for PA graduates. An additional $10,000 is being offered as an incentive for PAs who accept positions in rural and/or northern geographies.

This time-limited financial support is intended to facilitate the transition of Ontario PA graduates into the health care system to help address patient care needs. Opportunities for PA graduates will be supported in settings where the focus will be on meeting the goals of Ontario’s Action Plan for Health Care (Action Plan). Eligible employers must demonstrate a commitment to integrating and sustaining the PA position beyond the Career Start grant funding.
Prospective employers must apply by August 15, 2014. Once approved, applicants will begin recruitment through the HealthForceOntario Marketing and Recruitment Agency with the requirement that job offers be secured by October 31, 2014.

London Mayor Joe Fontana considers appeal of guilty verdict

Gord Cudmore said he and client Joe Fontana “aren’t going to make any knee-jerk reactions,” but admitted that an appeal of Fontana’s guilty verdict is something they’re considering.
Fontana was found guilty of fraud, breach of trust and uttering a forged document Friday in London superior court.
The maximum penalty Justice Bruce Thomas could impose for breach of trust – the most serious of the charges – would be 14 years in prison.
Thomas wouldn’t dole out anything close to that to a public figure with no prior criminal record, but any jail time would end Fontana’s term as London’s mayor immediately.
That includes house arrest.
The first thing Fontana and Cudmore will do is hear the sentence July 15. Then a number of avenues will be explored.
Cudmore was asked about a contentious issue during the trial, when assistant Crown attorney Tim Zuber asked to re-examine former Marconi Club general manager Joe DiPietro to contradict the testimony of former club president Vince Trovato.
Cudmore argued against it, but was overruled by Thomas.
“That could be one,” Cudmore said of grounds for a possible appeal.
London defence lawyer – who’s also been a Crown attorney – Phil Millar said everyone has the right to appeal, but he’s doubtful it would be granted in Fontana’s case.
“I think the judge was very careful in how he came to his decision. He essentially did what we call make it appeal-proof,” he said. “Essentially, he said the mayor lied. It’s hard to appeal that.”
Millar said Cudmore can base an appeal on the DiPietro issue, but doesn’t believe that would stand up to scrutiny.
Cudmore would have 30 days after sentencing to appeal.

Swedish Radio News said the Scandinavian country saw a sharp uptick in
the number of cases of syphilis last year [2013], while new cases of
chlamydia and gonorrhea are showing signs of slowing down.

The agency reported 275 new cases of syphilis, an increase of 37
percent from 2012; half of which have taken place abroad.

"Changed sexual behavior has contributed to sexually transmitted
diseases becoming common. Studies show that condom use among young
people is quite low with new and casual partners," epidemiologist Inga
Velicko at the agency told Swedish Radio.

[The increased incidence of syphilis in Sweden is similar to the
situation in the US and other countries (see prior ProMED-mail posts
below). In many countries, the increased incidence of syphilis is
occurring mainly among men who have sex with men (MSM), and has been
characterized by high rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
co-infection, high-risk sexual behavior, use of drugs such as
methamphetamines, use of Internet chat rooms to meet sex partners

about the epidemiology of the rising incidence of syphilis in Sweden.

of syphilis in Sweden among MSM, particularly in the big cities, has
been a major contributor to an increase in cases in that country

re-emergence since 2000 primarily due to spread among men who have sex

Estimated syphilis incidence among Swedish MSM was up to 28 times
higher than in the general Swedish male population. The most affected
age group among males was 25-44 years of age. The majority of
infections in men and women through heterosexual contacts were
acquired abroad, whereas the majority of infections attributed to sex
