( COMMENT :Patient is more scientifically observed and treated in Hospital. Diagnosis easier and faster.Post-op rehab more controlled. Hospital more expensive. Many patients now have private insurance plus Catastrophic medical insurance up to  $2-million. Example:Stem-cell transplant in Switzerland with month in hospital $250,000. Swiss hospitals have optional text in Russian.)

Cost of Defensive medicine: CPSO & Personal injury lawyers

Many investigations ordered to avoid CPSO complaints by patients and/or relatives. Anyone anywhere in the World can complain to CPSO about a member. The member has to respond. Personal injury lawyers often take no retainers bur charge 30 per cent of any award. Small claims court can award damages to $25,000 No lawyer needed. CPSO expensive; about $2,000 a year. Michigan Medical licencing dept charges about $290 yearly. MD can pay for 3 years in advance.

OMA members with MBA

There are a few OMA members with a MBA. It would be wise to include their knowledge in the group dealing with the Ontario Govt  (Comment by Dr A Franklin) OMA auditors KPMG should also be involved as well as the OMA Economics dept. KPMG LLP International could advise on Taxes ,Retirement and Estate planning.(KPMG has an Information service)

Daily Mail: UK NHS pays GP approx $Can 240 a year per registered patient ( tied to one GP).

Patient can change GP but can not wander from GP to GP as in Ontario. NHS pays whether patient attends or not. To avoid paying for dead patients, NHS now sends letters to those who have not visited their GP for 5 years. GP has a maximum number of registered patients approx 2200.. After reaching that number can accept private paying patients who have to pay for investigations as well.

OMA was not aware of this political movement. No liason between OMA and nearby School Public Health. Unlike Chiropractors and Registered Nurses organisations, little social interaction with Provincial Government. Chiropractors have dinners and advise members to keep bound copies of Thank You letters. Reg Nurses CEO Dr Doris Greenspun PhD(York) RN (Hadassah) attends social-political meetings. OMA Pres and CEO usually absent. OMA Pres is only a one year job. No partial pension for loss of practice. Nurse Practitioners in Ont now have similar rights as GPs. Physician Assistants increasing. For at least  45 yrs USA patients could choose a GP or PA at a clinic. Chiropractors have become the"musculo-skeletal " experts. Although Chiro.not covered by OHIP many people have private insurance which covers Acupuncture, Chiropraxy, *Dentistry, Massage, Naturopathy, Osteopathy, Podiatry & Psychology. <Leslie Dan school of Pharmacy now offers D.Pharm. which would allow D.Pharms to Diagnose ,Investigate and Treat. Pharms at present are paid by OHIP for 30 min  yearly consult @ $ 50. Also can give injections and change GP prescriptions. Reducing GPs cuts costs as GPs have to exclude rare diseases as they held to a higher standard in Law.

*In Ontario Dentistry is not a State Insured service; except in Schools and for those on Social service benefits.
